The Unlockers

Our blog’s name is taken from an oft quoted line in the original dub of Resident Evil, courtesy of Barry: “Jill, here’s a lockpick. It might come in handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.” The game is full of deliciously terrible quotes such as that one, but this one in particular has pervaded gamer culture pretty extensively. We like it.

Apparently a woman, in disguise~!

I started gaming a decade and a half ago, when my brother got a Nintendo Entertainment System. I pretty much stuck with what he played. We were Nintendo slaves through and through. We didn’t even try many third party games; we were too busy having fun with games like Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World, and who knows how many other games. Around the time the N64 was starting to fall from grace, my brother had moved out and I claimed sole ownership of the console. Then I totally fell out of the gaming habit for quite a while.

Then I bought a PS2 and suddenly I found myself in a world without mascots and with increasingly mature storylines. My first PS2 games were Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, Deus Ex: The Conspiracy, and Final Fantasy X. Those were a far cry from the previous generation’s Mario Tennis or Pokemon Stadium, as enjoyable as those previous games were. It literally was like a new dimension. My portable gaming was nonetheless continually dominated by Nintendo. There was no real other option. I did pick up a Neo Geo Pocket Color at one point, which was a fantastic buy considering its current rarity.

Finally, there came the current generation. I replaced my PS2 with a 60GB PS3, and was able to play three generations of games on one console that also served as my new Blu-Ray player. My portable gaming was bolstered by the new addition of a PSP. I was suddenly in the midst of many, many consoles. The addition of a Dreamcast only exacerbated things. I became happily obsessed with buying everything I could that was a good game…and life still is good along that same route.

Vaik’s Favorite Games (no order): Armored Core: Silent Line, Crysis/Crysis: Warhead, Dead Space, Drakengard, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Metal Gear Solid 2, Paper Mario, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner

The guy that never feels like~

Alright, time to be unbelievably boring post something about me i guess. I’m currently studying International Studies which is an unholy blend of history, economy and languages. But much more importanly,i’ve been a gamer for around 12 years or so!

My first system was a NES +Mario Bros/Duck Hunt that i loved to death:from it,i moved to a SNES that i loved EVEN more and so on until i found myself with more than 7 consoles because i never sold a single one.The latest addition to my decent collection was a shiny DSi that i finally bought after much thinking…my last portable console was a Game Gear and it didn’t went well,so i was a bit reluctant about the whole handheld business. And guess what? i love this little thing too.

What will i do on this blog? I’ll mainly write about anime, manga & vidya ;those are my main interests. You won’t find many rantings about my daily life, probably because i’m an easy-going person that doesn’t focus too much on gloomy moments and the like. Writing them down just reminds me of them,so it’s usually a no-go.

I pretty much like every gaming genre,be it FPS,platform or driving but i’m particularly fond of rpgs and everything that involves a hp bar over my head.Regarding those,my favourites series are the Shadow Hearts saga and Shin Megami Tensei so don’t be surprised if a 3-pages long review of Digital Devil Saga pops out of nowhere one day.

I also happen to be italian so i apologize in advance if some of my sentences are similar to the best anime engRish out there,this blog is also a chance for me to improve so i hope you don’t mind it too much.And if you do,you are evil ;_;

baccano39xo6-avatarWandering: Devon [20/M/FL]

Likes to kick cans in the backyard

I’m WanderingMind, although you can just call me Wandering.  In real life, I’m known as Devon.  I grew up in Florida and left the sunny state to attend college in Pennsylvania.  I’m currently a junior and I major in History.  I enjoy blogging, which I’ve been doing since 2004 when I got my start at 1up.com.  My interests include video games, anime, manga, reading, writing, blogging, watching random videos on youtube, history (especially Asian history), the outdoors, movies, and hanging out with friends.

I like any type of video games except for sports, but my top genres are action, adventure, and RPGs.  I’ve never been into computer gaming because I’ve been a Mac user to this day.  I’ve played most of the major consoles since the NES and I’m the current owner of all three current-gen systems: the Wii, 360, and PS3.  I’m also the owner of the Nintendo DS and the Playstation Portable (PSP-1001 model).  My favorite games right now are Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, Fire Emblem 7, Shadow of the Colossus, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Chrono Trigger.  I can list a lot more if I want to.  Worst game ever?  Cheetahmen II for the NES.

So let’s talk about how I got into video games.  I’ve been into video games ever since I was 2 years old.  My first memory was playing Super Mario World on the SNES.  My family never owned an NES, which explains why I have a lot of trouble with games that are old-school tough.  Even though my family owned a Sega Genesis and a Sega CD, I considered myself to be a hardcore Nintendo fan growing up.  My magazine of choice was Nintendo Power and was a subscriber from 1996 to 2002.  Thanks to that magazine, I knew about Pokemon from the time it came out here and got my hands on a bunch of games that many people overlooked, like Shantae for the Game Boy Color.  Did I mention that I was a big Legend of Zelda fan?  I still am.

I was a Nintendo fan well into the N64 years, playing games like Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Mischief Makers, and Ocarina of Time.  I got my first taste of portable gaming when I got a Game Boy Pocket in 1997.  Pokemon would later fuel my addiction.  Then there was Final Fantasy VII, which changed my life.  I remember going over to a friend’s house when I was 10 years old and seeing my friend play that game.  I was so amazed that I got a Playstation and became hooked on RPGs.  In fact, the only games I played for the PS1 back when Sony supported it were RPGs.  I was still a Nintendo fan, but the Playstation really broadened my horizons.  I soon got my hands on the Dreamcast and later the Playstation 2.

Now that I think of it, the PS2 is the console I’ve spent the most time on.  I had a Gamecube at home and used to play the Xbox back when I used to go to my dad’s house, but the PS2 had so many more games that interested me.  Even though I got the Wii when it came out, I didn’t go current-gen until last year when I got a 360.  Through a stroke of really good luck, I bought a PS3 two weeks after I got the 360.  To me, the Wii didn’t feel next-gen, so I spent most of my time on the PS2 when the Wii was the only current console I had at the time.

Aside from video games, I’m into anime and manga.  I grew up watching Pokemon, Digimon, Tenchi Muyo, and Miyazaki movies as a kid, thanks to the wonders of Toonami and anime becoming readily available on DVD.  Otherwise, I shied away from a lot of anime until I saw Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim when I was 15.  I loved the first episode so much that I continued to watch the show and got into other shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Excel Saga, and some other stuff.  Thanks to my college’s anime club, I was exposed to even more anime, like Baccano, Gurren Lagann, Haibane Renmei, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.  Favorite shows?  Baccano, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Excel Saga, Wolf’s Rain, and Code Geass.  I also read a good amount of manga, my favorite right now being Genshiken.

Favorite Games (in no particular order): Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, Riviera: The Promised Land, Shadow of the Colossus, Fire Emblem 7, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Chrono Trigger, Okami, Cave Story, SMT: Persona 3 FES, Streets of Rage 2

MOU’s Mecha Maniac

I can keep things simple since I don’t remember much of my early gaming years. My first home system was a Sega Genesis, and obviously I started with Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic was the first franchise I ever got into, but frankly as a kid, I was not too good at video games, and I never beat any of the Genesis games without cheating. Possibly before the Genesis was the Nintendo Gameboy, which I took just about everywhere, and I still had it up untill around the time the Advance came out. Tetris and Pokemon Blue were my big Gameboy loves, I spent hours playing them. Back then, Video Games were a fun distraction, I knew nothing about the war with Nintendo, hell, the only thing about Nintendo I knew was from playing the various Mario games with friends and family at their houses.

The Nintendo 64 was the first time I got into Nintendo, and it was the first video game system I ever begged my dad for for X-Mas. I spent a lot of time with the N64, especially with Super Mario 64. I had plenty of games, but I can’t remember all of them. A year or two later I got drawn to the Playstation, and picked it up, along with Spyro the Dragon. This is probably when video games shifted from being a side-hobby to my main hobby, especially when I was introduced to RPGs. The Legend of Legaia, The Legend of Dragoon and Chrono Cross, these were my first three RPGs, and they remained favorites of mine for many years (Chrono Cross is still amoung my Top 10 games).

The next generation came, I pretty much ignored the PS2, and was deciding between the Gamecube and the Xbox. Having enjoyed the N64 quite a bit, even though I would spend more time on the PS1, and the GC being more portable as I travelled a lot, I decided on the GameCube and picked it up for X-Mas. I spent a lot of time that first year on the GameCube, games like Pikmin, Melee and Metroid Prime were great, and still fun games today. But after a while, I could no longer ignore the PS2. I sold my N64, PS1, and bunch of old stuff, and picked up a PS2 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Ironically, I didn’t pick up a Memory Card, so thus I spent the first 4 months of PS2 ownership using it as a PS1/DVD Player. I got a Memory Card for my next birthday…and Kingdom Hearts. KH blew me away, especially for a game containing Disney, I’d never had as much fun playing a game before. Kingdom Hearts would remain my favorite game for a few years, holding off many great PS2 games, until Kingdom Hearts II was released. I was in Japan at the time of it’s US Release, but I was so hyped for it, the second I returned I grabbed my copy, and ignoring Jet Lag and School, played it like mad in under 3 days. It was weaker than KHI in some aspects, but every other aspect just shined through to me as better. It still has one of my favorite endings in any game, one I waited years for. Oh, the Xbox? Yeah, I picked one up after playing Halo 2. I only bought 4 games for it though, it remains my most underplayed system to date.

Current Gen: This current generation has actually been dominated by handhelds. True, more games from the PS3 (MGS4, Dead Space, Valkyria Chronicles) line my Top 10, and I’ve had plenty of good times on the Wii, but they haven’t yet eclipsed my time playing on the Nintendo DS. I’ve got over 20 games now, and as both a DS and a GBA, it’s seen so much use that I pretty much do take it just about everywhere. My PSP does get some use, but I admit to having an odd short attention span with most of the games, and it’s seen more use as a MP3 Player for driving than a gaming machine. Right now I own a: Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Sony PSP (1000), Nintendo Gameboy Advance, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation 2 (Fat), Sony Playstation 2 (Japanese Slim Model), Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox and a Sega Dreamcast.

As for myself, I divide my freetime between Japanese Animation and Video Games, though rarely evenly, I’m either playing a lot of games and ignoring anime, or watching a bunch of anime and ignoring games. Outside of games and anime, I love sports, and I frequently go to Ohio State Football games and Columbus Blue Jackets games. I also spend (way too much) time on my laptop, either browsing the web or making banners/avatars/etc on Photoshop, and I can often be found on AIM whenever I’m home (though, if you contact me, forgive me if I’m quiet or short, I’m usually preoccupied enough to barely talk.) One more thing to know about me, I love Giant Robots and Mecha. The Gundam franchise is one of my favorite things ever, I think Super Robot Wars is one of the most AWESOME game concepts ever, and Super Robots are pure awesome, get to know me well enough, and you’ll know that I’m obsessed with them.

The Kins’ Favorite Games: Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Kingdom Hearts II (PS2), Chrono Trigger (NDS), Chrono Cross (PS1), Final Fantasy IV (NDS), Metroid Prime (NGC), SRW Original Generation 2 (GBA), Kingdom Hearts (PS2), Dead Space (PS3), Super Metroid (SNES), Final Fantasy V (GBA), Zone of the Enders 2 (PS2), Tetris (GB), Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
The Kins’ Favorite Franchises (No Order): Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Chrono Series, Super Robot Wars, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Metroid, Zone of the Enders, Pokemon.

World is Mine - Hatsune Miku RA: Nikom [20/M/TH]

“Life is just about to start…”

Introduction? I’m RA. *pronounce as ray*.  In real life I’ve known as Nikom but just RA is fine. I was born and lived in Thailand. I’ve been studied in faculty of Computer Sci. for 2 years before I’ve switched to Information Technology in 2009 – so my real life is just begin. Even though I have been an international student while I study CS but I’m still not good at grammars (and never good at it). I wonder how could I make this far, to entered the backlog… and joined MOU. I’ll grab this chance to learn many things here. Social, people and improve my English.

Enough of drama. Talk about system. now I currently have Sony Playstation, Sony Playstation 2, Sony Playstation Portable . a few system, That’s terrible ;A; . Actually I have a Gameboy and Famicom but they already broken so I can’t play it anymore. I remember I was once addicted to Megaman 6 on Famicom and all Megaman series on Gameboy when I was a kid. That’s amusing! My dad bought me a PS when I’m 12 and starting to play a lot of games. That would be the beginning of my gamer life. 360 PS3 is going to be my next system. saving more buck 😀

Since my interest is (really) anime, RPGs, Turn-base strategy and I’m Eastern, Thai. (again, what bring me here from that faraway place..) I’ll write and share about my weekly life with anime, gaming and something that would be interesting – I’ll think more about this. what? this isn’t the place I supposed to be? Ahaha, you may guess 😉 I may not talk much about vidya game but I still love them, especially turn-base RPG games! I spend the most of time in life is just put my ass in front of computer and click click click on it. blogging, listening to music, web programming or even melt down the brains online… I’ll play game only when I feel like to and have the ‘great’ motivation. The best example, the girls that usually in my backlog’s banner xD

I apologize to you all if what I say make you misunderstand or feel this is not right. but of course you can blame me, correct me or throw me shit. as you please. Well, n hope you guys enjoy my post

RA’s Favorite games (In no order): Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 3, Front Mission 4, Front Mission 5: Scars of the War, Shin Megami Tensei – Persona 3: FES, Star Ocean: til the end of time, Tales of the Abyss, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow six: Vegas 2, Left 4 Dead, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7,  Soul Calibur 3, DJMax Portable (series), Metal Slug (series).

Rarutos Avatar 1

I am Rarutos, but almost everyone calls me Rar. If not Rar, then it is Raru, Ruto, or Ralts. I reside in Southern California, and am currently enrolled in college as a History major and hopefully a soon-to-be Japanese minor. I technically already have a blog, but I decided to join this one because I thought it would be a lot more enjoyable to do it with a group of friends, rather than by myself. I’m still keeping the other blog though, for less meaningful posts; however, it shall be here, where my video game essays shall go! I am under the impression that this blog is mostly dedicated to reviews and impressions of anime and video games! Since the whole concept of the blog has not exactly been explained to me yet… But yeah, I’m the new guy, and hopefully everyone will welcome me with open arms!

My first video game systems were all Nintendo. I had the NES, SNES, GBC, the N64, and nothing else besides those for those generations. (Unless you count a couple of months of having the PSX before I bought my PS2…) That said, I absolutely adore Nintendo games! My first Mario game was Super Mario Bros. 2 if I recall correctly, but I truly only have fond memories of my gaming life from the SNES generation and beyond. I do however; remember playing Bubble Bobble for quite a significant amount of time with my cousins. I can’t say that I truly loved video games until I played Kirby Super Star and Yoshi’s Island for the Super Nintendo. The Kirby series is still one of my favorite Nintendo franchises to date, and I probably still have drawings of Kirby all over the place, since I was drawing him fairly early in my elementary school career. (Also, if you’re looking for The Legend of Zelda in this paragraph, I didn’t start playing those until the Oracle games on the Game Boy Color. To date, the only 3-D Zelda game I’ve beaten is Wind Waker. I know, blasphemy right? I’ll get to Ocarina of Time eventually… At least I’ve played, beat, and loved A Link to the Past… That’s worth something right? Also, I didn’t start Metroid until Fusion, but I do love the series.)

Then there was Pokémon, I first played it when my cousin brought it to my house one day, and I ended up playing it the rest of the night until he had to go home. Chose Charmander, and being my young and ignorant self, only used Charmander, got up to Misty, and couldn’t beat her. Then, my cousin had to leave. I ended up buying all three versions of the original Game Boy ones after that (with a Game Boy Color), and continued buying all the versions of subsequent sequels. Needless to say, I was hooked. Heck, I was even planning on buying every Pokémon game that would ever come out! That plan worked out until the Gamecube years (Yes, I did buy Hey You, Pikachu!), when I decided not to buy Pokémon Channel, although I still do have quite a good track record in buying the games… Only missing Pokémon Channel, Pokémon Box Ruby & Sapphire (Because it was only available online at the time), Pokémon Dash (Although I had owned it once before), and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness (I wanted to get this one actually…). I am obviously, still quite the Pokémon fanboy.

Besides Pokémon, I am quite an avid JRPG player, RPGs are my favorite genre of video games. I also quite enjoy platformers, fighting games, action/adventure, and strategy games. Also, I am seemingly expanding into the shooter territory, as I have started to play games like Resident Evil. Also slowly expanding into the VN territory, starting with Clannad. Anywho, my first JRPG was Final Fantasy IX, (unless you count Pokémon) and it still is my favorite Final Fantasy to date. Other favorite RPG series include Tales, Atelier, Ar tonelico, Kingdom Hearts, Shin Megami Tensei, and Fire Emblem among others. Also quite a huge fan of VanillaWare games nowadays. At first, I did only buy a PS2 for Final Fantasy games, but since then, I have realized that Final Fantasy isn’t exactly the best series in terms of RPGs in the world, and have therefore expanded my outlook on JRPGs, just going around, trying anything I deem interesting. Even today, I am seeking out old RPGs that I might even be remotely interested in, and will try to get my hands on it, despite the huge backlog of games I already have.

However, among all of these amazing JRPGs, my favorite ones have to be the ones from GUST. Best known for their Atelier series of games involving 2-D graphics (They only recently transitioned to 3-D with their first PS3 release) and item synthesis. These games are just beautiful in terms of story and characters, as well as using the old style of 2-D graphics and fantastic music. Although I can’t quite say I truly love the whole series quite yet, as the only ones I’ve played are the ones that have been released in the United States: Atelier Iris 1, 2, and 3, Mana-Khemia 1 and 2, and Ar tonelico I and II. These games took the series towards a more traditional JRPG style, rather than focusing on item synthesis. Thankfully, Atelier Annie, which has the more traditional gameplay will be released soon, and I’ll be able to experience it for the first time!

Oops, seems like I went on too long of a tangent, anywho, I’ll try to cut it short. Basically, favorite games: JRPGs. I also quite enjoy fighting games like Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, and BlazBlue. I have a deep appreciation for video game characters and stories in general, being huge fans of some of them. One of my favorites being Chroche Latel Pastalie from Ar tonelico II.

I currently own all the current gen consoles, and am still playing on my PS2 quite often. As stated earlier, I’m always looking for new JRPGs to play, and new stories to enjoy.

In terms of manga/anime, I enjoy a lot of different kinds, ranging from shounen to shoujo manga, and dramatic to comedic. My favorites include, One Piece, Kanon, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Shakugan no Shana, Mai-HiME, and Cardcaptor Sakura. There’s a lot more I like, but hopefully this short list will be enough to be aware of my tastes. I haven’t been paying much attention to manga/anime nowadays (I’m so behind in One Piece), choosing to mostly focus on playing video games in my spare time.

I apologize for the long essay. I always seem to write too much for my own good when it comes to things like this. Either that, or History majors just like to write a lot, because Wandering wrote a lot more than everyone else (Except Sushi), and I seem to be writing a lot more than him…

Rarutos’ Favorite Games (In no particular order): Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica, Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny, Mana-Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis, Odin Sphere, Tales of Vesperia, Persona 3, Pokémon Platinum, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Fire Emblem, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Yoshi’s Island, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Kingdom Hearts, among others.

Top 5 Favorite Game Series: Ar tonelico, Atelier, Tales, Pokémon, Fire Emblem.

Top 5 Favorite Game Producers: GUST, Namco Bandai (Definitely not my favorite publisher though), Nintendo, VanillaWare, Atlus. (Capcom deserves a special mention too, I guess.)
